Baseball
Sunday was our oldest son’s third game of the season. His first time at bat he struck out. Despite not hitting yet this season, we’re very proud that he holds his head up high, jogs back to the dugout, and returns his coaches high-fives. His enthusiasm doesn’t dim and he continues to love the game. His second time at bat: Strike. Ball. Swing and miss. Inside my head: “hit the ball, hit the ball, hit the ball.”
SMACK! He hit it! I jumped up it the air! “Yes!” He runs with everything he has.
Safe, at First! He looks for us along the fence, making sure we saw it. A huge grin on his face.
On the next hit he runs to Third.
And on the next hit he slides into Home with a very close Safe! The dugout erupts with excitement!
When I was little I was a dancer, then a cyclist and now a runner. As a kid, I enjoyed the freedom and independence of my sports. I never understood team sports. But now as a parent, I understand the importance of them. The kids think they’re just playing baseball but really they’re learning lessons that will stay with them for a long time. Perseverance, patience, courage, positive attitude, team-pride, and self-pride.
They didn’t win that game. I think it was 15 – 3. But you wouldn’t know it by watching the kids leave the dugout.
A huge Thank You to our coaches who always keep things positive!
